Welcome to the Grit Reapers, the podcast for aspiring online entrepreneurs that cut through all the crap in the online business world and dishes out the raw and real truth about what it really takes to have a successful online business.
[00:15.7]
No sugar coating, no get rich quick schemes, just honest advice with a healthy dose of humor and hope. We're your hosts, Gayle and Candice, two online entrepreneurs who've been there, done that, and lived together.
[00:31.9]
Tell the tale. So if you're looking for straight talk, practical tips, and the occasional reality check to get your online business moving, you're in the right place. Let's get down to business. Hello, Gail. Hey, Kens. How are you? I'm good.
[00:50.3]
How are you? Good, thank you. Amazing. I'm excited about this episode. We're going to play a little game called Trash or Treasure. And for our listeners, what we've done is Gail and I over the week, obviously, kind of like in. In the.
[01:06.9]
In the few minutes of spare time or, you know, scrolling on different platforms, kind of have screen grabbed some stuff, like from reels and advice and stuff like that from other creators. And we are going to pull up one of them and discuss whether or not we think this hook and this piece of content is trash or treasure.
[01:30.9]
So for people that are watching our podcast, you'll see now you will see the screenshot coming up of what we're going to be discussing. And for those that are listening, basically it was a real. On Instagram.
[01:47.2]
And the hook was this one hook got me 3.2 million views and over 4,200 followers in one week. And then a little bit of text pops up and says, I basically doubled my followers with one reel, and I can show you how to go viral, too.
[02:07.8]
So Gail and I have written whether or not we think this is fresh or treasure, and we are going to reveal that in three, two, one. Gail. Oh, right, yes, we both think it's Trash.
[02:29.1]
Okay, there I am. Okay. Okay, Gailey, talk me through it. What are your thoughts on this piece of content? So, cans, when you said we should do a program like this, I was like, I think that's a really good idea.
[02:47.9]
Because I had a similar reel that I saw yesterday, you know, something very similar. And every time I see something like that, I'm just like, but you don't tell us where you are right now for that to have happened.
[03:07.6]
So I'm not saying it didn't happen. But you, you know, creators don't say something like, you know, I've been on. Was that on Instagram? Cans, I've been on. I've been on Instagram for the last eight years, and I've amassed a following of 67, 000 people.
[03:28.6]
You know, all they say is, this one hook did this. And, you know, when you read it, you coming from the situation that you are in at the moment, and my Instagram at the Moment has got 396 followers or something like that.
[03:46.2]
And, you know, I would be like, okay, yes. And Kans and I were just laughing because I still. Even though I know. Even though I know better, I still go, maybe I should just spend that 27 and get it, you know, And Then I can also get 4,600 new followers in one week.
[04:08.2]
So that's why I said trash, because I would love to see people being more transparent about, yes, I got this result, but this is where I am. And so this is how it happened. Those are my thoughts. Totally. Totally.
[04:25.6]
It's like, it's not a con. It's, like, never contextualized, you know, it's like, I feel like I get, like, so angry when I see. I feel like it capitalizes and it, like, takes advantage of this very, like, vulnerable space that, that, like, business owners who are struggling are in, you know, and that you are so muddled and confused and.
[04:50.8]
And you've got this, like, burning desire just to get in front of more people, help more people, make more sales of the thing that you can do really well, you know, and it's like, it. It almost like taps into that. And then, you know, before you know it, you.
[05:07.8]
You've signed up to this program or you've downloaded or whatever it is, or maybe you even try it. Like, maybe you even try and do what they say, and then you become so disheartened because it didn't work. Like, you didn't go viral and you didn't get 4, 000 new followers, you know?
[05:26.0]
Yeah, like, the stuff I'm talking about. And I think the real challenge, you know, is how do you be an ethical marketer? I almost feel like, do those two words even, like, go together? You know, how do you be an ethical marketer?
[05:43.3]
Because you want to tell people the truth, but that isn't what sells. Like, people buy into this. It's like the HARP tactics have much more traction than. But actually, let me tell you how it really works. And, and you know, what can that.
[06:00.1]
Actually, it's. It's a really good point. And I find myself doing it, you know, you. You want to believe that it can happen for you quickly. You want to believe that you can get those results quickly. You don't want to hear that it's going to take you five years to get to that follow account of posting cons instantly.
[06:21.7]
You know, in your head, you know that. But if you could just get there quicker, if you could just get to that success quicker. It's why even now, I will often be like, oh, wow, you know, like, maybe that.
[06:37.7]
Maybe she really does have something there. You know, like, Mario was all about messaging and just this one change, and I'm just like, maybe I just need to find what that one changes. Meanwhile, we know that messaging is something that has to be developed, it has to be developed in conjunction with listening to your audience and testing new things and, you know, really seeing what, what resonates with your audience. So.
[07:06.0]
So one thing that she might have changed, changed her messaging for her and got her the results. But remember, I and you are completely different people to the person you know on that reel or telling us this with our own unique personalities, our own unique audience.
[07:25.7]
Because remember as well, we attract different audiences based on who we are. You know, if we all attracted the same audience, it would be a bit of a problem. So it's, it's not only they not sort of talking about the situation they're coming from.
[07:42.1]
If you, if you did go ahead and, you know, purchase it or follow them, your unique circumstances are completely different to them. So that's also why sometimes you can get it and follow it to a T and it still doesn't work for you.
[07:59.5]
I also feel like they just like these convenient emissions, you know, where it's like, oh, I just launched my whatever mastermind and it's sold out in like 24 hours.
[08:14.7]
And you're like, oh my God, how, like, how did you do that? Because I've been struggling for like three years. Okay, so we want to know and then they'll talk you through what they did. But what they're not telling you is, oh, and, and by the way, my ad spend was through the roof, you know.
[08:33.4]
Yeah. That they're not telling you that they sold it out in however long. But actually they put thousands and thousands of dollars running paid advertising. You know, so I feel like, I feel like, you know, we, we just need to be critical.
[08:51.0]
Like just have your ears and eyes open and just be aware. Yeah, totally. Just be aware. Like a lot of people. And I almost got such a shame because I feel like 90, 90 of people in this online space are in mud.
[09:10.4]
Like we're in the mud. We all together, but we ashamed to say, like, oh, I ran like a live training and three people came. Somehow this terrible dirty secret. We're not allowed to say that. We have to say. I had like 700 people show up.
[09:26.0]
You know, like, yeah, it's okay. It's okay to just be honest. Like I had three people come. It was great. Three more like than I had last time. It's whatever. That people feel embarrassed to be honest about. Like how they doing what they doing.
[09:43.2]
And like somehow it like you lose credibility if you tell people, yes, I sold out my program, but I also spent like a lot on ads. Like, why is it, why can't we just say that you don't lose credibility? In fact, I feel like people that I resonate more with actually gain credibility with me when they are from transparency.
[10:05.4]
I agree, I agree. Because there's a couple of people that I actually follow who are really transparent. Yes, they have, they have great successes, you know, and they talk about it. One in particular has just, they've just done their first hundred k month right now.
[10:23.6]
We see this a lot, you know, 100k month, a 10k month. But, but these people are actually telling you exactly what it took to get to that 100k month, including the costs of advertising, the costs of their team, like who does what, you know, so, so you have these outward facing people who you could, if they weren't transparent, you could believe they're doing it all themselves, you know.
[10:50.3]
And I think this is where the difference comes in is I am more inclined to follow people and I get more inspiration from people who actually tell it like it is because for me it goes into my brain and it says, right, so you want a 10k month and all you've got is one offer that you are launching every three months.
[11:12.0]
You're never going to get a 10k month with that. The math just doesn't add up. And I feel like, I feel like so much of the stuff we see on the Internet is just the result but with no substance of how to get there. And I really appreciate it.
[11:27.1]
It galvanizes me. It makes me realize that, you know, I need to do certain steps, I need to be creating certain offers. And I think, I think if you're going to follow people, see, you know, follow the people who are transparent about that so that you can actually see what it takes to get those results rather than just the results themselves.
[11:49.9]
Yeah, that's really well said. I mean, I always laugh when I see like pictures of, you know, you, the, the feet, just the feet crisscross and then you see like this beautiful tropical beach.
[12:07.2]
And then of course, the hand, the hand cocktail. And it's like living my best life, you know, work. I only work an hour a day and, and I always laugh at that because I feel like a more accurate image of online business owners would be like a prison cell.
[12:24.7]
You know, hey guys, I'm living my best life here in my prison cell with my computer, change my leg. Because actually, you know, for those of us who are not in the position yet to have teams of people doing building landing pages, you know, the automations, the scheduling, emails, doing the design work on those landing PA posting to social for us, you know, for those that are not there yet, like you're not on a beach, you, you feel like you actually changed your laptop.
[12:59.2]
And, and again, I feel like it's really, is inspiring if you can get there one day, but it takes a lot and like no one's really explaining. The reason I work an hour a day is because I have five people in my business who don't work an hour a day.
[13:15.2]
They work a full day because they doing all the work so that I only have to be available for one hour a day. That's the difference, you know. Yeah. And I also, I also just feel like I was saying to my coach on Wednesday we had a call and I was just saying, you know, this business journey is quite amazing.
[13:38.7]
Like I don't know how our readers, our readers, our listeners resonate with this, but I feel like I came in really bright eyed and bushy tailed. Right. You know, with the promise of what an online business would be.
[13:54.4]
And I was very lucky. I got into it quite quickly. I was taken in by a mentor who helped me not actually with any sort of group coaching or anything like that, but rather as a service provider. And I was very lucky to be able to earn, you know, quite well initially and build up this business.
[14:15.3]
And then when I decided I wanted to scale, you know, we told to scale and start group coaching and things like that. That's when you really realize how difficult it is. And everything that I've been telling people as a service provider, it was almost like that, you know, teaching somebody to swim because you've read the manual, you know, and it's just like, oh, but used to think, I used to think to myself, but my clients are just not doing what I'm telling them to do because it's hard when it's actually you doing it.
[14:45.4]
But I feel like every, every next step, every launch, every new offer, every new experiment just adds a layer to your business and you just learn more and you become more confident, you become more consistent.
[15:04.6]
And yes, it starts off with small wins, but then those small wins turn into slightly bigger wins, slightly bigger wins. So it's difficult, but it's your journey and it will get you to where you want to be.
[15:19.9]
You just have to be persistent again, like Kens and I say don't look for too many shiny objects, don't look for the next quick fix or that magic silver bullet because we haven't found them yet. They might exist, but we haven't found them yet.
[15:37.8]
So yeah, just to keep on going, you know, just keep on going, testing, doing what you need to do because you will eventually get there. It's just a process. Hundreds, hundreds, hundreds. And what's trash for me might be treasure for you, you know, Exactly. In the beginning, you know, I always laugh.
[15:54.8]
I always laugh at myself. I have a really, I can have a really good sense of humor about how that naive and just so green behind the ears. I was, you know, maybe a few years ago seeing a post like that would have been treasure for me. You know, now it's.
[16:09.9]
I feel like I'm just a bit battered and bruised and I've learned a bit. Like, I'm not sure if that actually works. Like so. But this was fun. This was fun. If you guys have have enjoyed this kind of like, is it trash?
[16:25.6]
Is it treasure? Please let us know and then we can do a couple more and maybe you can even send in some like, we'll never, ever, ever bash publicly like creators. Like we're never going to show who. Whose profile it was on. It's like not about that.
[16:41.8]
It's just about like whether or not this is in our opinion. It's our opinion, like good business advice. So you could send in even screenshots you've seen and we could just talk through them. But yeah, Gailey, I think you couldn't have said it better.
[16:57.4]
And we hope you guys have enjoyed this, like, kind of short, shorter style. And what we do have for you, we do have for you, which we, we feel is like, I mean, I just feel like it would have been nice to have and we, we put together like a little bit of a reality checklist, you know, for business owners, for online business owners.
[17:16.7]
If you want to go see what we think are really helpful principles to kind of like know up front. And you can go grab that. We'll drop the link below or it'll be in our show notes or the description or whatever. But I promise you'll find it. And yeah, we love to hear from our listeners, our subscribers, followers, all that kind of stuff.
[17:35.8]
So you can always get hold of us. I promise we last people we are. And we will. It'll be us, not our team. Yes, absolutely. It will be us. All right, cool. Well, Gali, I'll see you next week. And to our listeners, thanks for tuning in and we'll catch you next week too.
[17:53.4]
See you next week. Bye
